The Bachelor: Mushroom and Plant Kingdom

(and Happy Earth Day!)

As a former lawyer and policy advocate for Earthjustice, I know a thing or two about Earth Day. I’ve spoken at rallies in front of thousands of people about the Safe Drinking Water Act. I’ve petitioned the EPA about the dangers of toxic chemicals leaking into our drinking water from fracking. I’ve organized countless events educating people about various environmental initiatives, including organic farming, the negative health impacts of factory-farmed meats and the leaching of pesticides into our waterways, among other things.  

Despite these professional accomplishments, I started to notice I wasn’t actually convincing any of my family or friends to change their ways. My dad (who I adore) continued to buy pallets of bottled water from Costco. My friends weren’t buying compost buckets and paying the compost guy for Tuesday pickups like I was. Even though I had dedicated my life to saving the environment, it seemed like no one was listening. 

Why wasn’t I making an impact on my personal circles? 

Because people can’t be shamed into being an environmentalist. They have to be inspired. 

In my post-Earthjustice era, I’m taking a different approach to environmentalism. The plants – through my many plant medicine ceremonies – have spoken and kindly told me to chill the F out. They showed me how the spirit of nature is lighthearted and wise, and doesn’t respond to doom and gloom. And they’ve graciously shown me my purpose on this earth: to inspire people to connect and love nature in a playful way that brings joy to their hearts instead of shame.

So of course, when I founded Little Saints in 2021, my desire to inspire a universal love for plants was at the heart of my creation.

I wanted to find a fun way to show people that each plant has a unique personality and brings its own gifts to this world (just like us!). When we interact with plants with intention, we can absorb these gifts to heal and inspire each of us. 

Throughout Little Saints' first summer, I dressed as the “Terpene Queen” at every event to make it easy for people to understand terpenes (one of the key ingredients in Little Saints) without having to rely on words. The terpene queen had a necklace made of eucalyptus, lavender and lemons (all ingredients in Little Saints’ terpenes), and she was bright and colorful (just like the mood that Little Saints’ terpenes inspire). Instead of having to read words on a sign, people got to interact with the terpene queen and laugh. When they left the Little Saints activation, they may not have been able to describe the science of terpenes, but they remembered what the Terpene Queen felt like and the lightness that surrounded her. 

Fast forward to today, and we (i.e. team Little Saints and I) are just as dedicated to bringing plant personalities to life as I was in 2021 by being the most creative environmentalists we can be.

Every Little Saints can or bottle, for example, has a unique crest of mushrooms and plants, which weaves the history and magic of our ingredients into our DNA. Last summer, we upgraded our website by bringing our mushroom and plant kingdom to life on our website via illustration, weaving a fantastical story of nature, dance, and innovation into our branding (completed by a jaguar mascot, that embodies the properties of the plant ingredients in our St. Ember). 

For example, every Little Saints can or bottle has a unique crest of mushrooms and plants weaving the history and magic of our ingredients into our design DNA. Last summer, we upgraded our website by bringing our mushroom and plant kingdom to life via illustration, weaving a fantastical story of nature, dance, and innovation (completed by a jaguar mascot, that embodies the properties of the plant ingredients in our St. Ember). 

And today, in honor of Earth Day, we’re taking our unique brand of environmentalism to the next level, with our most playful, and ridiculous, plant creation yet: 

The Bachelor of the Mushroom and Plant Kingdom. Sponsored by Little Saints. 

Yes, I’m talking about The Bachelor, the TV show. If there can be a Bachelor in Paradise, Bachelorette, Golden Bachelor, and countless other human versions of The Bachelor franchise, we don’t see any reason why our mushroom and plant friends should be excluded. While not everyone watches The Bachelor (I’ve personally only seen a few episodes), I’m willing to bet there are more people who could tell you what The Bachelor is than could tell you the personality of a Reishi or a Lion’s Mane Mushroom (like those in Little Saints drinks). And we’re here to change that.
